The origins of the Catalan university system go back to the Middle Ages, to 1300 AD, when the Universitat de Lleida, inspired in the University of Bologna, was founded. In the centuries that followed, the Universities of Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona, Tortosa, Vic and Solsona were also founded. Today’s Catalan university System is the product of this medieval tradition, with centres with more than five centuries of history.
